About me
Laura Callaghan is a professional textural mixed media ecofeminist artist, born in Margate in Kent, and now living and working in Saltdean, Brighton in East Sussex, UK.
Laura’s artworks are inspired by the natural world, and mixed media and paint are at the heart of her artistic output. For Laura, the sea and nature are her sanctuary.
Laura’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in her reverence for the natural world, finding solace and inspiration in the boundless expanse of our world and oceans.
Working organically, Laura incorporates collaged ephemera and found objects into her art, layering translucent paints to imbue her canvases with hidden depths and nuanced meaning. Each artwork becomes a unique journey, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a captivating visual exploration of the world around us.
At the heart of Laura's artistic ethos lies her commitment to ecofeminism, a thematic thrust that permeates much of her current work. Through her art, she serves as a defender of the oceans, using her creativity as a tool for advocacy and environmental stewardship.
With an international following, Laura's work has been showcased in exhibitions across the UK, earning accolades such as endorsement from Sir David Attenborough. Her contributions to esteemed events like the Artist Open Houses in Brighton and exhibitions like the #200Fish exhibition in Lincolnshire underscore her impact on the contemporary art scene.
Intricately textured and alive with layers of meaning, Laura's seascapes capture the essence of the sea, inviting viewers to appreciate its timeless beauty. Her recent works, including larger show-stopper paintings and smaller collections inspired by local coastal environments, serve as poignant reminders of the delicate balance between human activity and the natural world.
Beyond her gallery exhibitions, Laura actively engages with clients through commissions, collaboratively crafting paintings that reflect their unique passions and experiences. By incorporating beach-combed materials and personal narratives into her art, she creates bespoke pieces that celebrate cherished memories and connections to the natural world.
Laura's dedication to her craft and her unwavering commitment to environmental advocacy shine through in every brushstroke. As an ecofeminist, she uses her art as a powerful tool to defend the oceans and inspire positive change, understanding that inequalities of women and nature need defence and action.
Operating from The Open Studios on Brighton seafront, Laura's art resonates with audiences worldwide. Additionally, her work is displayed at Gallery 5 in Salcombe and Gallery 5 in Dartmouth, South Devon, as well as Artologie Gallery in East Sussex where she serves as a resident artist.

Here's a recent commission testimonial from a happy client...
"Laura created a beautiful painting for us, combining two of our favourite subjects - seascapes and sunsets. The result was a stunning piece, combining lovely shades of blue, with hints of orange, and wonderful textures, which catch the light in so many different ways, depending on the time of day and where you stand to view it. The painting has pride of place in our bedroom and we often find ourselves stopping to admire it. The commission process was very easy. Laura was keen to understand what we hoped to achieve, and we went through a selection of her previous work, picking out the colours, textures and other features that appealed to us. Then, we left Laura to it! She sent regular updates, including photos of how the painting was progressing, which were great for us to see. And, of course, we were delighted with the final result. We're so glad we discovered Laura and decided to commission a painting with her".
