She and the Sea: A World Ocean Day Art Exhibition

8 March 2024

I’m thrilled to tell you all about my upcoming art exhibition in June! It feels apt to launch these dates today, on #internationalwomensday Women’s Day. I’m bringing together a group of women artists, including myself, to explore the beauty and importance of our oceans through the lens of art, celebrating World Ocean Day at The Crypt in Seaford, East Sussex, from June 8th to June 16th, 2024, open daily 10am - 4.30pm. @crypt_gallery
Opens three months today!

ADDRESS: Crypt Gallery | 23 Church Street | Seaford | East Sussex | BN25 1HD

Through visual art, the exhibition delves into the challenges facing our seas. It aims to connect audiences with the ocean’s threats and explores how artistic expression can catalyse discussions and actions.

The exhibition features Brighton-based mixed-media seascape ecofeminist artist Laura Callaghan (that’s me!) alongside curated works from regional artists specialising in ceramics, textiles, and jewellery (Jenny Morrish, Lucy Morrison, Claudia Weatherley) as well as works from art students from BHASVIC college.

World Ocean Day is an international event, observed annually on June 8th and is a global call to action for the protection and appreciation of our oceans. This year’s theme, “Catalysing Action for Our Ocean & Climate,” inspires collaborative efforts for a healthier planet and a more just society. The artists believe in the transformative power of both the sea and art in making us feel better. The exhibition focuses on fostering hope and optimism rather than despair, visually symbolising collective efforts toward a better future for our oceans.

Pop the date in your diary and I’ll reveal more about the artists involved in the coming weeks…
